SASSA Announces Major Repayment Drive After Overpaid Grants to Deceased

SASSA has made good progress in fixing many audit problems. However they still face some challenges. They need to stop payments that go to people who have died. They also need better ways to catch fraud. Their computer systems need to be more secure too. The agency knows these issues exist & is working on solutions.

How Far Has SASSA Come in Fixing Audit Flaws?

SASSA leaders met with Parliament’s social development committee in Ocotber 2025. They shared good news about fixing problems from the 2023/24 audit. They said they fixed 98% of the issues that the Auditor-General found. The agency made three big changes.

– First they added fingerprint checks to stop people from cheating the system.

– Then they started looking closely at people getting grants to make sure they qualify. They found over 200000 cases that needed checking after looking at credit records.

– SASSA is also moving away from paper files. They are putting everything on computers now. By Ocotber 2025 they had scanned 67% of their active files.

What Key Errors Still Remain in SASSA’s Payment System?

SASSA still faces several problems that need fixing.

The biggest issue is that they paid about R140 million to people who had already died. This happened because they didn’t get death notices fast enough from Home Affairs. SASSA is now working with banks to get this money back. There’s also a big fraud problem.

– In one case R55 million was stolen at a local office. The police are looking into this and other fraud cases. Another problem is wrong payments.

– SASSA spent R1 billion incorrectly in 2021/22. They gave money to people who shouldn’t get it like government workers who got SRD grants.

– The last big problem is that SASSA depends too much on other government departments. They need information from these departments to work properly but often don’t get it in time. This version is simpler & more direct.

What Urgent Actions Are Now Being Taken to Fix the Crisis?

SASSA is adding new rules from the National Treasury to make the system better.

-They want to watch payments more closely and check if people really need grants.

-They will look at people’s income every month by checking different databases.

– Some people will need to use fingerprints to prove who they are.

SASSA is making these changes step by step. They know they need to tell grant holders about any reviews that might affect them. The agency wants to make sure the right people get help while stopping wrong payments.
